The semi-final scenario

The likes of India, South Africa and Australia have qualified for the semi-finals while Pakistan, New Zealand and Afghanistan fight for the final spot. The qualification scenario would have been more interesting hand the Afghans defeated Australia on Tuesday in Mumbai. But a Glenn Maxwell classic snatched victory from their jaw and ensured a knock-out spot for the Aussies.

1 spot, 3 contenders

New Zealand, who are currently placed 8 on the table, will be in action on Thursday, as they face Sri Lanka in a must-win clash to remain alive in the semis race. The Kiwis are on 8 points, level with Pakistan and Afghanistan but are placed fourth owing to their superior Net Run Rate (NRR) of +0.398.

Babar Azam and co. are next in line, they are fifth owing to their inferior NRR of +0.036, however, they are ahead of Afghanistan who have -0.338 NRR.

Behind Afghanistan are England who have no chances of making it into the semifinals, but they can still finish in the top seven to reach the Champions Trophy 2025.
