In a fresh development and exciting update for fans, Hollywood star Michael Fassbender might feature in George Clooney’s upcoming espionage thriller series. According to a Variety report, Fassbender is in talks for a significant role in Clooney’s highly awaited series ‘The Department’, the shooting of which is expected to commence soon.
Directed and produced by Clooney, the series will be made under the banner of Grant Heslov’s Smokehouse Pictures, MTV Entertainment Studios, and 101 Studios. Scheduled to go on floors in London this year, The Department is based on Eric Rochant’s hit French spy show ‘The Bureau’. However, a confirmed update about Fassbender’s character or his decision is yet to be known.
Meanwhile, the original show features Matthieu Kassovitz in the lead role of Guillaume Debailly. The story revolves around him, a member of a clandestine branch of French Secret Services, who returns to his home base after completing a six-year mission in Damascus. The show further shows how he struggles to let go of his false identity and illicit affair with a Syrian woman, only to find himself playing in a double game between the DGSE and the CIA.
Last year, Showtime and Paramount Media president and CEO Chris McCarthy shared that the upcoming series will follow in the great tradition of ‘Homeland’.
“Just as ‘Homeland’ elevated global espionage to new heights, ‘The Department’ will take viewers even deeper into a world of intrigue and subterfuge with complicated characters who struggle with their own demons as they fight existential threats to the nation and the world,” the statement added. On the other hand, 101 Studios CEO, David Glasser said, “We are thrilled to be partnering with George and Grant on this amazing project.”
The French show was a major hit on Canal+ in France. However, it is to be seen how the Clooney series performs in comparison to the original version.
A release date for The Department is still awaited.
