In the recent developments in Hollywood, the film industry had to deal with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, which delayed production and pushed back important release dates. Not to forget that previously the COVID-19 pandemic delivered a huge blow to the industry as well. But now we are way past the troubles and are waiting with anticipation to embrace the year 2024. And the New Year will also bring with it a ton of exciting films, navigating the realms of several genres, making movie enthusiasts all the more excited. As 2023 is coming to a close, let’s take note of some much-awaited Hollywood films.
Deadpool 3
Even before its release, updates, and glimpses from the sets of Deadpool 3 have been doing the rounds on the internet. Directed by Shawn Levy, the superhero flick stars Ryan Reynolds in the lead alongside Wolverine fame Hugh Jackman. Although not much is known about the third sequel, it is expected that the two protagonists would join focus to defeat a common enemy. Deadpool 3 premieres on July 26.
Joker: Folie à Deux
After the much-successful Joker, Todd Phillips is back with a more intriguing sequel — Joker: Folie à Deux. While Joaquin Phoenix will once again reprise his role as the psychotic Arthur Fleck aka Joker, the latest addition to the cast is singer-actress Lady Gaga. She will essay the role of Harley Quinn in the film. Joker 2 will hit the big screens on October 4.
Dune: Part 2
Director Denis Villeneuve, a visionary of science fiction, wowed viewers with Dune in 2021, a film regarded as one of the best cinematic masterpieces. That raises the bar significantly for the follow-up Dune: Part Two, which is scheduled to be released on March 15. Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya, together with franchise newcomer Florence Pugh, appear in a teaser video that promises an exciting showdown on the desert planet Arrakis, complete with enormous sandworms and rival factions.
Inside Out 2
With the premiere of Inside Out 2, the much-anticipated sequel to the popular 2015 animated film, Pixar will once again bring its distinctive heart and animation style to the big screen. Helmed by Kelsey Mann, the film revolves around the multiple emotions one faces in life with the new addition being the disorderly and erratic Anxiety, voiced by Stranger Things fame Maya Hawke. Inside Out 2 will be released on June 14.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
At the conclusion of War for the Planet of the Apes (2017), the third movie in the reboot trilogy of the acclaimed science fiction series, Caesar, the chimpanzee who guided the apes to global dominance, passed away. But there is more to look forward to in the upcoming Wes Ball directorial Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, slated to hit the silver screens on May 24.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
The Mad Max franchise is up for an adventurous spin with director George Miller’s upcoming action-thriller Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Starring Queen’s Gambit fame Anya Taylor-Joy and actor Chris Hemsworth, the prequel will shed light on Furiosa’s kidnapping and her rise in the kingdom. The film is headed for a May 23 premiere.
Mean Girls
This teen movie was a hit back in 2004. With Lindsay Lohan in the lead alongside Amanda Seyfried, and Rachel McAdams in important roles, the film perfectly documented the teenage school-going phase, with the concept of “Burnbook” becoming a norm. Now, director duo Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr are back with a special rendition of Mean Girls with a fresh new cast, up for release on January 12.
Madame Web
The Spiderman spin-off we were waiting for is here. Madame Web, helmed by SJ Clarkson ropes in Fifty Shades Of Grey fame Dakota Johnson in the lead. With the power of clairvoyance, she is responsible for protecting three women from danger while unravelling secrets from her past. Madame Web will hit the theatres on February 16.
A Quiet Place: Day One
With hard-hitting performances by Emily Blunt and John Krasinski, A Quiet Place franchise secured a special spot in the hearts of the masses. A spin-off prequel featuring Luipta Nyong’o, Joseph Quinn, Alex Wolff, and Djimon Hounsou apart from Blunt will take fans of the impending horror franchise back to its roots this summer. It will shed light on the beginning of the alien invasion that devastated the world. A Quiet Place: Day One will be released on June 28.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire
In this Monsterverse, two rivals — Godzilla and King Kong formed an uncanny alliance to thwart “a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence — and our own.” The sci-fi action helmed by Adam Wingard, is one of the most-anticipated films of 2024, ready to hit the theaters on April 12.
