Xolo Mariduena, the talented actor who plays the character of Jaime Reyes in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), has shared promising insights into the return of Blue Beetle within the upcoming DC Universe (DCU) films led by James Gunn and Peter Safran. The anticipation surrounding Blue Beetle has been steadily growing, predating Mariduena’s introduction of the character in the penultimate installment of the DCEU last summer, leading up to the release of Aquaman 2. In this regard, James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios, has also outlined the trajectory of the new DCU, initiating with Creature Commandos and culminating in the official launch with his film Superman: Legacy scheduled for 2025.
Gunn has reportedly affirmed the continuity of Mariduena’s portrayal of Blue Beetle, along with the inclusion of “a handful of other characters,” in the upcoming DCU narrative, separate from the standalone Blue Beetle movie.
In a recent interview at the 2024 Saturn Awards, Mariduena expressed his confidence in the return of Blue Beetle, marking a significant milestone for DC as the character stands as the first Latino superhero to lead a solo film in their cinematic universe. With a sense of assurance, Maridueña stated, “I know we’ll see Blue Beetle again, whether it comes in the form of Blue Beetle 2 or wherever. It’s been really great to work alongside James and Peter. It’s an honor.”
Additionally, he also hinted at the imminent return of Blue Beetle, saying, “Now, where Blue Beetle heads in the future? I don’t know. But I can confidently say that we will see him soon.”
As fans eagerly await the return of Blue Beetle, questions arise about the character’s status within the soon-to-be-rebooted DCU. Director Angel Manuel Soto, in a prior conversation with ComicBook, shed light on the movie’s role in establishing the foundational elements of Blue Beetle for movie audiences. The film introduces Jaime Reyes as a recent college graduate transitioning into the role of a novice superhero.
Soto reassured, “It’s not just the character of Blue Beetle, it’s Xolo being Blue Beetle [in the DCU].” This adds to what audiences have learned about Jaime Reyes’ background and family in the movie and contributes to the character’s identity within the broader context of the DCU. Soto expressed, “It’s a vote of confidence that what we did, the impact that it did and how it was shown, whatever they end up doing in the bigger scheme of the DCU, you can always go back to Blue Beetle to know what are the foundations of Jaime Reyes.”
DC’s Blue Beetle movie, released in August 2023, is currently available for streaming on Max, providing audiences with the opportunity to learn more about the origins of Jaime Reyes and witness the foundations of this much-anticipated Latino superhero within the DCU.
