When Dara Singh Told Daler Mehndi Not To Return To India After 1984 Riots
In a recent media interaction, Daler opened up about his life in the US and why he decided to come back to India.

Renowned singer Daler Mehndi has made bhangra popular worldwide. He is also known for popularising Indie pop songs, without relying on Bollywood. He is best known for his dance and colourful outfits, consisting of turban and long, flowing robes. As per reports, the singer was initially working in the US. He even had a work visa there; he was just a month away from getting his green card, but that’s when he decided to pursue his passion of becoming a singer in his home country. In a recent media interaction, Daler opened up about his life in the US and why he decided to come back to India.

Daler Mehndi shared that he was highly worried about his future in America. He used to work as a cab driver and lived with his three brothers. Initially, the three of them thought of buying a petrol pump or a liquor store. That was the only work there. Daler Mehndi said he always had a dream to do something else. He wanted to be someone famous around the world.

The singer also said that he once performed at a show, where big stars such as actor-politician Dara Singh and actor Kabir Bedi were present. Daler further shared that the show was a success and all of them were happy. Dara Singh put his foot down when the singer shared with him about his plans to move back to India.

Hearing this news, Dara Singh said to Daler that if he wants to make a career for himself, he does not need to go to India; he can make it here in the USA. Daler further said, “Several other people also started saying the same thing. The 1984 riots had just happened, and this was the year 1986. I was told, ‘Kya diya India ne? Waha koi rasta nahi hai, jaga nahi hai, waise he saare dushman hain wahan humare (What has India given? We have no relation there, no place; we only have enemies there).”

Daler Mehndi further shared an incident during the conversation about how his dream of returning to India was not taken seriously at that time. Daler Mehndi said that one of his friends had jokingly said, “Of course you should go to India because Bappi Lahiri and RD Burman are all waiting for you.”

Daler Mehndi added that at last he, without informing anyone, booked a ticket to return to India. Although he had a work permit there (USA) and was going to get a green card within a month, he thought if he stayed there for more time, he would not be able to do what he wanted to do.

After returning to India, Daler Mehndi never looked back and is currently one of the biggest sensations in the music world.
