This year, the OTT space was dominated by actors playing characters with shades of grey. The year 2023 witnessed the digital debut of Bollywood’s big names and the audience finally giving some OTT gems their due. At News18 Showsha Reel Awards, we recognise those talents who have weaved magic on the small screen and honour them for their dedication towards their craft and fulfilling their commitment to entertaining viewers.
Here are the nominees for Popular Choice Best Actor in the Web Series category:
Shahid Kapoor (Farzi): Farzi marked the digital debut of superstar Shahid Kapoor. After ruling people’s hearts on the big screen, Shahid proved his mettle yet again with his performance as Sunny. In this Raj & DK directorial, Shahid Kapoor plays the character of a small-time artist who ventures into the world of counterfeiting after creating the perfect fake currency note.
Suvinder Vicky (Kohrra): Suvinder Pal Vicky became a prominent name after starring in Shahid Kapoor-led Udta Pubjab. However, his breakthrough performance in Kohrra was what brought him immense recognition. He plays the character of sub-inspector Balbir Singh, who investigates the murder of a rich man in Punjab.
Abhay Deol (Trial By Fire): Trial By Fire showcases the journey of the couple who lost their children in the Uphaar Cinema fire in 1997. Abhay plays the father, Shekhar Krishnamoorthi, unabashedly seeking justice and sinking in grief while navigating corruption and the politics of the legal system.
Vijay Varma (Dahaad): From playing a ruthless serial killer to an honest cop, Vijay Varma’s OTT filmography has been quite interesting in 2023. His role in Dahaad as a serial killer on the loose in Rajasthan who murders women caught everyone’s attention. After years of playing the supporting character, people have finally begun to realise Vijay’s potential.
Aparshakti Khurana (Jubilee): Aparshakti Khurana impressed the audience as Binod Das in Vikramaditya Motwane’s Jubilee. The drama series is loosely based on the rise and fall of Mumbai’s legendary film studio, Bombay Talkies. Aparshakti plays the character of the studio’s trusted aide on his way to stardom.
Aditya Roy Kapur (The Night Manager): Aashiqui 2 and Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani fame Aditya Roy Kapur made his OTT debut with The Night Manager. In this Indian adaptation of the British crime-thriller, Aditya plays an ex-soldier turned hotel manager who has to infiltrate the inner circle of an arms dealer to save the nation.
