Kalki 2898 AD director Nag Ashwin is on cloud nine with his film’s blockbuster success at the box office. The film left audiences with exciting news: a sequel is officially on the way! The movie concluded with a tantalizing “To Be Continued…” hinting at more to come. Director Nag Ashwin then confirmed that the epic blend of mythology and action requires more than one instalment to fully unfold. Now, he has shared a big update on the film’s sequel.
In a recent chat with Hindustan Times, Nag Ashwin said, “Yes, work is happening on the second one. We had shot portions of it in the earlier schedules when part one was being filmed. We shot for about 20 days. But there’s still a long way to go in terms of planning and thinking.” He added, “However, the second part should hopefully take lesser time to complete and release than the first one.”
The director was also questioned about whether he had to be extra careful while referencing Indian mythology in the film. “What we chose to do and the way we did it, such a situation didn’t arise,” said Ashwin and added, “It didn’t come to a point where we had to be overtly cautious. What’s written in Mahabharata, we kept it straightforward that way.”
Nag Ashwin said that this was the correct time to introduce audiences in our country to Indian stories. “I felt it was the right time to tell this story. There is a huge audience in our country- not just in cities, but smaller towns who embrace stories like Marvel and Star Wars. I felt we should explore our homegrown superheroes, it is very Indian,” Ashwin said.
Reports suggest that Kalki 2898 AD Part 2 will spotlight the formidable character Yaskin, played by Kamal Haasan, as he embarks on his perilous mission. This narrative arc explains his relatively minor role in the first film. The central plot will revolve around how Ashwatthama (Amitabh Bachchan) and Bhairava (Prabhas) plan to confront him.
It’s expected that Kalki 2898 AD Part 2 could take up to three years to produce. Directed by Nag Ashwin, ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ stars Deepika Padukone, Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, and Kamal Haasan in pivotal roles.
Kalki 2898 AD became the talk of the town since its release. The film heavily draws inspiration from Mahabharata. It is set in a dystopian future and revolves around four people — a pregnant woman named SUM-80 (Deepika Padukone), who is said to be carrying a child that is the 10th avatar of Vishnu; the immortal Ashwatthama who has been tasked to protect the unborn child; a ruthless villain named Supreme Yaskin (Kamal Haasan), who wants the child dead for he knows the child will be the end of the baddie; and Bhairava (Prabhas), a bounty hunter who would sell anyone in return of money.
