Actor Akhilendra Mishra, known for his work in the acclaimed 2001 release Lagaan, has expressed his disapproval at blatant differences of pay in the film industry. In a recent interview, the actor revealed how producers and filmmakers disregard a talented actor’s experience and treat them as objects. In an interview, Akhilendra Mishra delved into the unsettling trend of exploiting character actors, causing a money disparity. According to his claims, the producers resort to cutting costs, which simply disregards an actor’s experience and value in the film industry. In lieu of that, they discuss an actor’s rates over phone calls, treating them as replaceable commodities.
Akhilendra Mishra, who is known for his roles in blockbuster releases like Lagaan, the Legend of Bhagat Singh and Ready, highlighted the need for equal compensation in the industry. He stated in the interview, “Har producer paisa kam dena chahta hai (Every producer wants to give less money). Koi lihaaz nahi karta (Nobody has any consideration).” Speaking further he added, “Now corporate culture has come, so the people discussing remuneration are new people who aren’t even aware of your body of work. Unhe maloom hi nahi hai kaun kya hai (They don’t even know who is who). Wo bas phone uthake call kar dete hain aur bargain karte hain (They just pick up a phone, call you and start bargaining).”
The actor then also brought to light the very evident difference between the financial stability of a superstar and a character actor. He stated, “Is industry mein paisa sirf stars ke paas hai aur kisi ke paas nahi (In this industry, only stars have money and no one else).” He claimed the producers only give money to them. Akhilendra then added, if a character artist is hospitalised today, they do not even have the money to buy medicine. They have to collect it from others. A lot of professionals in the industry struggle to make a living and die with nothing, he added.
