The release date of the biopic on the Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray was coinciding with two other films, Cheat India and Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi, on January 25. Ever since the trailer of Thackeray released, the Shiv Sena has been demanding a solo release for the film, asking other filmmakers to change their release dates, so that it gets a clear release and enjoys the perks of the Republic Day weekend.
As a result, Emraan Hashmi starrer Cheat India's release date has been preponed. The film, based on the Indian education system, will now open in theatres on January 18. Both the producers of Cheat India and the makers of Thackeray are hosting a joint press conference on Friday where they will reportedly announce the news.
On the other hand, Kangana Ranaut's Manikarnika stays put on January 25. Sources close to the film say that there is no decision about shifting the release date so far.
The Republic Day weekend was supposed to be a packed one at the box office, with as many as 4 films big releases planned initially. While Hrithik Roshan's Super 30 got postponed months ago, the talk about changing dates of Cheat India and Manikarnika arose after Thackeray entered the scene.
It had also been reported earlier on that Shiv Sena has issued a warning to the makers of the movies it is clashing with at the box office. Bala Lokare, who is the Secretary of Shiv Sena Chitrapat Sena had stated in a Facebook post that he won't let any other movie release on that date.
But Kamal Jain, the producer of Manikarnika, had said earlier that his film will release on the scheduled date. "We are definitely coming on January 25 since the Republic Day weekend justifies our film. Rani Laxmibai is a national icon like Balasaheb Thackeray and there are enough screens and shows to accommodate the two films, so there shouldn’t be an issue with respect to screen count."
