Fans are excited to see Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh team up for We Live in Time and Garfield recently shared how the film holds special meaning for him, drawing from his own life experiences. Speaking after the world premiere at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, the Silence actor reportedly mentioned director John Crowley and reflected on how the upcoming film is a collection of emotions and moments “that one goes through in one’s life – personal experience, personal loss, personal love." Garfield also said that he and the entire team behind the film were “lucky" to incorporate their personal and private experiences into the movie.
“I think that we were lucky enough to be able to bring all of those private personal things to this in ways that were healing for us, and hopefully healing for an audience as well," said the Under the Silver Lake actor. Reflecting on the filming process, Garfield explained in an interview post-premiere that the film’s story had a strong foundation, adding that “in terms of preparation for the particularities, it feels like kind of what was being referenced before by Florence."
He compared the story to one where actors aren’t sure what will happen next, which made it even more compelling.
During a post-screening discussion on September 6, 2024, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 star spoke about his experience working with Florence Pugh. He said it was a rare and special opportunity, as Pugh’s approach draws the attention of her co-stars and encourages them to tune in deeply. He added that her performance brings authenticity to every scene, making it feel “the most sincere and original one."
On a personal note, The Social Network actor said that the entire experience was one of surrender and letting go, which added a layer of depth to his role.
We Live in Time tells the story of Tobias (Garfield) and Almut (Pugh), a couple who meet by chance and quickly fall in love. But the film goes beyond just romance, showing them supporting each other through several tragedies and eventually starting a family together. The official trailer, released earlier last month, reveals how their random encounter transforms their lives over time. As the trailer shows, they not only find love but also build a life and family, though they encounter many difficulties along the way.

The official synopsis of the film reads, “An up-and-coming chef and a recent divorcée find their lives forever changed when a chance encounter brings them together, in a decade-spanning, deeply moving romance."

Florence Pugh, an Oscar nominee, has previously starred in films like Don’t Worry Darling, The Wonder, A Good Person, Oppenheimer and Dune: Part Two. Andrew Garfield, known for his role in Under the Banner of Heaven, has also received an Oscar nomination for his performance in Tick, Tick… Boom!
We Live in Time will be released in theatres on October 11.
