Chaitra Navratri, one of the most prominent Hindu festivals, commenced on April 9 and will continue till April 17. Today, April 13 marks the 5th day of the Chaitra Navratri and on this day, Goddess Skandamata (a form of the Goddess Durga). One of the most revered astrologers Chakrapani Bhatt from Kashi talked about the two yogas being formed on this auspicious day. He said that the Goddess Skandamata would be worshipped today in Shobhana and Ravi Yoga. Today Shobhana Yoga has commenced in the morning and will last till 12:34 pm, while Ravi Yoga will remain from 05:58 am to 09:15 pm. Shobhana and Ravi Yoga are considered fortunate for proceeding ahead with auspicious works.

Goddess Skandamata is fond of bananas, and therefore the devotees should offer bananas to her which is believed to keep the worshipper in good health. The devotees can also offer Kheer and Meva as the bhog to Goddess Skandamata.

How to worship Maa Skandamata

The devotees should wear clean clothes after taking a bath in the morning and then meditate keeping in mind the fifth Navadurga form of Mahadevi (Goddess Skandamata). They should chant the mantras in praise of Skandamata and worship her by offering akshata (whole grain rice), kumkum, red flowers, bananas, batasha, kheer, incense, lamps etc. The devotees should complete the puja rituals with a ghee lamp or camphor. During the puja, the couple who are yet to embrace parenthood should pray to Maa Skandamata to get blessed with children. As per popular beliefs, her blessings are considered the most important to start a family.

Who is Maa Skandamata

The word ‘Skanda’ means Kartikeya, the son of Lord Shiva and Parvati, and ‘mata’ means mother. Maa Skandamata is thus regarded as the mother of Lord Kartikeya or Skanda, who is also known as Murugan or Subramanya in different parts of India.
