The festival of Navratri is considered very important in Sanatan Dharma or Hinduism. The auspicious festival is celebrated four times a year. There are two Gupt Navratris, one Chaitra Navratri and a Sharadiya Navratri. The first Navratri of the year is known as Chaitra Navratri, while the second Navratri is known as Sharadiya Navratri. The festival of Navratri is dedicated to Goddess Durga. During Navratri, people worship the 9 forms of Goddess Durga ritually for 9 days.
Hindus commemorate the goddess Durga’s victory over the demon Mahishasura during Navratri. Because of Mahishasura’s devotion to Lord Brahma, a more powerful God, he was bestowed with immortality, meaning he would never die.The one condition attached to this ability was that only a woman would be capable of vanquishing Mahishasura. The demon was content with the arrangement because he didn’t believe any woman could kill him. When the demon’s menace increased over the years the most powerful pantheon of gods came together to create Goddess Durga, who killed Mahishasura after a 10-day battle.
To please the Goddess, people worship the form of Navadurga for 9 days of Navratri. According to Hindu calendar, Chaitra Navratri will start from April 9 next year and end on April 18; on the other hand, Sharadiya Navratri will start from October 3 and end on October 12, 2024. Ayodhya’s astrologer Pandit Kalki Ram lists out the days during Navratri and the forms of the Goddess that will be worshipped on particular days.
