Bhutan got its first-ever queer beauty queen and that too during Pride Month. The 23-year-old Tashi Choden Chombal was crowned Miss Bhutan 2022 and is now all set to represent the country at Miss Universe 2022. Choden is confident and proud of her sexual orientation. Speaking to The Bhutanese, Choden revealed that she came out as a bisexual person initially on Facebook. “As I did more research and reading, I realized that I am actually a woman comfortable in my body and attracted to other women,” said Tashi.
In an Instagram post shared on Valentine’s Day, Choden is seen kissing her partner, Nyima S Dorji, with the stunning snowfall in the background. The caption accompanying the post read, “My forever valentine. The person who brings out the joy in me. Your flaws are perfect for the heart that’s meant to love you.”
Born to a Bhutanese mother and a Tibetan Khampa father in Nagaland, Choden comes from a mixed ethnic background. By the age of 14, Choden lost both her parents and was taken care of by her maternal aunt, grandmother, stepfather and her two half-siblings.
Describing the time when she had to adjust to a new lifestyle after losing her parents, Choden told The Bhutanese, “It was a difficult period for me. I am the oldest, and so I had to pick up the pieces and make it work, and be an example (to her siblings).”
Recalling the time she came out to her family, Tashi said that she did so on the International Pride Day on June 2, 2021. She said her family is very conservative, and the reaction was strong from her aunt and grandmother. However, after a month or two, they also accepted the Choden’s sexual preference. She even described her relationship with her partner and said that they are like a regular couple who spend time together and do things that couples do, but they also give each other space.
