Indian medium pacer Ishant Sharma has been ruled out of the first Test against New Zealand in Kanpur as he is recovering from Chikungunya, a viral disease transmitted by infected mosquitoes.

Anil Kumble, India’s head coach, confirmed that no replacement has been named for the bowler.

“Ishant Sharma is recovering from Chikungunya and will not be available for the first Test match. We have not asked for any replacement and will choose our first XI from the available 14,” Kumble told mediapersons after the training session.

Ishant has been spearheading India’s pace attack and picked up eight wickets in the recently-concluded four-match Test series against West Indies. He is the most experienced bowler in India’s current Test squad has claimed 209 wickets in 72 matches.

The first Test of the three-match series between India and New Zealand starts on Wednesday at the Green Park stadium in Kanpur. The Test series will be followed by a five match one-day series.
