Chennai: Upcoming Indian star Yuki Bhambri combined well with seasoned Carlos Moya of Spain to move to the doubles quarter-finals, overwhelming Robby Ginepri (USA) and Dudi Sela (Israel) 6-2, 4-6, 10-5 at the ATP Chennai Open Tennis tournament on Wednesday.
The duo showed great swiftness and elegance in their first set win, but lost the second due to some unforced errors. But they got back to their winning ways in the super tiebreaker to overwhelm their rivals.
Bhambri did not exhibit any nerves in having to play with someone of Moya's stature and volleyed well. He showed great maturity in understanding the Spaniard's movements in court to enable him be in a better position to hit winners.
The Indian-Spanish combine went on to lead 5-2 in the first set, which Bhambri served out. The threat of rain during the tie break dissipated and play continued.
However on the outside court, the match between Mahesh Bhupathi/Rohan Bopanna and James Cerretani/Travis Rettenmaier of USA was stopped later because of a downpour, with the Indians leading 6-3, 5-5.
The Indian duo or the American-Israeli pair winners will take on Bhambri and Moya in the quarter-finals.
