CHENNAI: Residents of Kannagi Nagar staged a protest before the local police station after an 18-year-old youth was beaten up by cops on Sunday. K Murali (26), a painter and resident of Kannagi Nagar, told Express that a local youth, Santhosh, who was an ITI student, was standing before his house around 8.30 pm. Though the reasons are not clear, he was beaten up a police party that was patrolling the area. The cops then took Santhosh in their bike to the Neelangarai station, the painter said. “He was beaten up there and sustained injuries all over his body and almost became unconscious,” he added. While his relatives rushed the injured youth to Lifeline Hospital, the residents gathered before the police station protesting against the police action. Murali said such cases of police brutality occurred frequently.Gold RobbedAn elderly woman was robbed of 30 sovereigns of gold jewellery at knifepoint in Thiruvottriyur on Saturday. R Dhanalakshmi, a resident of North Mada Street, was returning home from a hospital at Kaladipettai. When she was walking towards her house, a man waylaid her at knifepoint and robbed her. She lodged a complaint with the Thiruvottriyur police.Liquor Bottles SeizedThe police seized 1,872 bottles of liquor worth `20 lakh - smuggled from Puducherry and hidden in a mobile phone shop at Mylapore - on Saturday.The police raided the cell phone shop of R Suryamurthy (40) .
