Jolarpet police arrested a 27-year-old man and launched a manhunt for his associate, on charges of murdering a 37-year-old ex-service man, Prakash.
Police were pursuing a different line of investigation when they stumbled upon evidence after taking in Appu (alias) Prabakaran, the neighbour of the deceased, on suspicion.
Police altered the man-missing case, filed on May 23, into murder, after the confession of one the murderers. Police exhumed the body of, Prakash, from Retteri on Sunday, in the presence of Tirupattur tasildar Manila and seized the wire used for strangling Prakash.
Police registered a case against Prabakaran and his friend Petchimuthu of Oosinattanvattam under Section 302 (murder) and 201, causing disappearance of evidence of offence) of IPC.
“After retirement from the defence force, Prakash had taken up street theatre and folk art,” said Inspector of Police and Investigation Officer (IO) R Ravichandran.
“Prabakaran, who allegedly had an affair with Prakash’s wife, Surekha, wanted to get rid of him to marry her,” he said.
On May 15, Prabakaran and Petchimuth picked up Prakash and took him to the lake on bike. “They served him liquor and strangled him and buried the body in a pit, in Retteri near Jolarpet,” said the IO. Initially, the police were misled due to the information given by the deceased’s mother. “Prakash’s mother had spoke to her son on May 16 over phone. Prakash had told her that he was in Krishnagiri and will return in two or three days,” said the inspector.
But the telephone tower of the call showed Jolarpet area. Investigations revealed that Prabakaran had spoken like Prakash. A team has been formed to nabPetchimuthu, who is at large. Forensic staff have taken skin and vital organs for medical investigation. “We have taken the skull for superimposition and femur bone for DNA test,” said assistant director of Forensic Wing, K Pari.
