The Uttarakhand Cabinet approved the report on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) on Sunday evening during a meeting held at the Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s residence. The Pushkar Singh Dhami-led Uttarakhand government on Saturday held a cabinet meeting to discuss and approve the draft of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), which would make way for the BJP-ruled state to become the first in the country to adopt the UCC.

Following the meeting, the Chief Minister spoke to reporters and said that many issues were discussed in the meeting, adding that “in this session”, they will bring UCC, “whatever formalities are being completed”.

This comes after a government-appointed panel headed by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai, on Friday submitted a voluminous document to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, who said the “long-awaited moment has arrived”.

Justice Ranjana Agnihotri, Head of Uttarakhand UCC Committee reached Dehradun on Friday and was accompanied by the member secretary of the state’s UCC Committee, Ajay Mishra.

On Monday, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said bringing UCC in the state was their electoral promise.
