New Delhi: Joining hands with the Government in the "no tobacco" campaign, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has directed universities across the country to take immediate steps to remove cigarette shops around their campuses.

"The shops, if any, selling cigarettes and other tobacco products around the university, are to be removed immediately," the UGC said in a recent circular to Vice Chancellors of all universities and deemed universities.

The Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act 2003 contained certain provisions pertaining to educational institutions.

To ensure effective implementation of these provisions, the UGC said the boards in universities and their affiliated colleges should prominently display that sale of cigarettes and tobacco products in an area within a radius of 100 yards of a university is strictly prohibited.

They should also state that such sales are an offence punishable with a fine up to Rs 200, it said.

Teaching and non-teaching staff of universities and affiliated colleges should be sensitised on the issue so that the "system is in place immediately".
