THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Two boys drowned in the Karamana river, near Mulathoppu area of Mankattukadavu, within the Malayinkeezhu police station limits on Saturday. The deceased have been identified as Rahul, 16, son of Rajan,  Kizhakkumkara Puthenveedu, Kavalottukonam and Sujeesh alias Kannan, 13, son of Suresh, Puthuveetumele, Kavalottukonam.According to Malayinkeezhu police, the accident occurred around 2 p.m at  Panachamood Kadavu near Mulathoppu area. Five students, hailing from Puthuveetumele came to Mankattukadavu to cut bamboo to construct a shed for ‘Athappookkalam'.The group, after cutting bamboo, took bath in the  Karamana river near Panachamood Kadavu. While three of them went for fishing, the other two stayed in the water.According to the local people, the depth in the area is more than two metres. Rahul and Sujeesh, who were swimming, accidentally fell into a sand pit formed by illegal sand-mining. The rest in the group rushed to the spot. But they could not get close to the drowning boys as none of them could swim.Hearing the shouts for help the local people reached the spot and tried to rescue them. But the boys were already dead. Later the bodies were shifted to the Medical College Hospital.Rahul was a Plus-I student of SMV School and Sujeesh, an eighth standard student of AMHSS, Thirumala.
