A section of trade union activists attempted to create a commotion at the Kaikkatty guest house in Nelliampathy on Monday, shouting slogans against the UDF MLAs who were on a visit to the area.
The MLAs were receiving petitions from members of the Planters’ Association, trade union leaders, workers and environmentalists, when some activists, under M M Kabir of the HMS, shouted slogans against them, asking to leave Nelliampathy.
Kabir demanded that all workers be given two acres of land, on condition that no resorts should be built on it and that it won’t be transferred. Subsequently, he, along with a handful of workers, began to shout slogans against the MLAs. However, the protesters were chased away by the police. A large contingent of police personnel headed by the Nemmara CI had been deployed in the area ahead of the MLAs’ visit, to prevent any untoward situation. Police officials accompanied the MLAs to the Cherunelli estate and also to the Kaikkatty guest house, to provide protection to them.
The protesters also tried to manhandle environmentalist S Guruvayurappan of the Wildlife Protection Society of India and Dr P S Panicker of the Nelliampathy Protection Committee, when they were leaving the guest house after presenting a petition to the MLAs.
However, police officials helped the two environmentalists leave the guest house safely, by escorting them to a vehicle. Guruvayurappan later filed a complaint in this regard at the Padagiri police station in Nelliampathy.
