Tribal youth beaten up

Babu, 20, a tribal youth from Goolikadavu Ooru in Attappadi, sobbed as he narrated how he was harassed and beaten up by the owners of a private marketing firm located near the KSRTC bus stand near Chalakudy, Thrissur, after he failed to achieve the daily target set by the firm.

President of Thaikula Sangam, a tribal women’s organisation, Bhagavathi and Babu’s mother, Rangi, said that he was admitted for nine days at the Agali Government Hospital and for 4 days at the Palakkad District Hospital. Babu and his brother Satheesh Kumar, 17, had applied for the job after seeing an advertisement in a local channel in Attappadi.

Bhagavathi said that the firm was managed by a close relative of a police official of the Agali police station and on that basis the Chalakudy Sub-Inspector used to constantly call and threaten Babu to rejoin for duty.

Rangi said that she was not even allowed to call Babu while he was at work. Both Babu and Satheesh were promised a salary of `4,000 but were given only `2,000.

Babu, who had undergone a heart surgery at the age of 13, said that the firm’s employees took him to a cabin and hit him as there were no sales on a particular day.Bhagavathi said that Babu went to Chalakudy on April 23.

He returned home on August 15 and submitted complaints to the Superintendent of Police, District Collector and the Chief Minister. There has been no enquiry on the complaint.
