Though all barrages have the same capacity, full production can be achieved only during the normal water flow into the river, from June to January, when water from the Mettur Dam could be discharged for irrigation purposes in the Tanjore delta area.During the rest of the months, nearly 8-10 MW of electricity could be produced depending upon water flow into the river. The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) has started a power generation trial run by storing water in its barrage constructed across the Cauvery at Chozhasiramani, near Erode.

TNEB officials told Express that barrages of 2 x 15 MW capacity already existed at Sokkanur, Nerinjipet, Koneripatti, Uratchikottai, Samayasangili and Vendipalayam at the Mettur Dam.

The new Chozhasiramani barrage could be commissioned shortly. Though all barrages have the same capacity, full production can be achieved only during the normal water flow into the river, from June to January, when water from the Mettur Dam could be discharged for irrigation purposes in the Tanjore delta area.

During the rest of the months, nearly 8-10 MW of electricity could be produced depending upon water flow into the river. Chozhasiramani barrage also has a 12 metre road for public transportation. The cost of the new barrage will be less as the width of the river is smaller at that particular spot.

TNEB has to manually remove the plants to check their entry into machines. The river is owned by PWD and only they are allowed to remove the hiatus.  Spread of chemicals on the plant must be studied to ensure that it does affect drinking water quality.

After power generation the cost of the barrage project can be recovered. The hydel project is environment friendly and the cost per unit is much less compared to the power produced in thermal and nuclear plants, said a TNEB source.
