KOCHI: The toll collection on the national highway 47 in Kumbalam was disrupted following continuous protest of the National Highway Protection Council at Kumbalam on Tuesday. The rally was taken out as part of the statewide protest in which several organisations took part. As part of the protest over hundred vehicles rejected to pay the toll and the collection was disrupted.Addressing the gathering at Kumbalam, environmentalist C R Neelakantan said the protest would continue unless the government withdrew and cancelled the toll collection on the highways. The government is neglecting the basic right of citizens to travel across the state by collecting toll on highways, he said.“Public roads are made for everyone, but the government has adopted the policy of allowing only the rich to travel through public roads. The public is already paying 52 per cent tax on petrol and paying an additional toll for the road is unbearable, he said.
