Tiger Woods faces strong challenge at US PGA
Almost all of world's top 100 golfers are featuring at the PGA Championship.

New Delhi: The next big thing for Tiger Woods is the US PGA Championship which starts on Thursday. Woods will be aiming to win his 15th career Major title and believes he can do just it.

Woods is also pursuing Jack Nicklaus' record of 18 Majors. Nicklaus and Walter Hagen also hold the record of winning PGA Championship five times.

The 33-year-old world No. 1 is a clear favourite to win the PGA Championship that is being held in Minnesota.

Woods has won five tournaments since returning from an eight-month absence after a reconstructive knee surgery with consecutive victories at the Buick Open and the WBC Bridgestone Invitational.

Though he hasn't won a Major this year, he has, by his own admission, had a phenomenal year.

"Well, it's been a great year either way. For me to come back and play and play as well as I've done and actually win golf events... to say that at the very beginning of the year, when I was feeling the way I was. To be honest with you, I don't think any of us would have thought I could have won this many events this year," says Woods.

Almost all of the world's top 100 golfers are set to feature at the PGA Championship and Woods will have to beat the strongest field in golf if he wants to win his 15th Major of his career.

He has been paired with defending champion Padraig Harrington and Rich Beem for the first two rounds of the tournament.

"Well as far as what distinguishes it, it's the best field that we play against. This is the deepest field that we get, and usually there's 98 or 99 of the Top 100 players in the world here. I don't know what the number is this year but that's usually around what the number is. It's been very deep; you know if you win this championship, you've beaten the best field in all of golf," he says.

Thousands of fans were out in Minnesota on Wednesday at the practice sessions, and there was little doubt who their favourite was as Woods pursues Nicklaus's record of 18 Major titles.

Meanwhile, top Indian golfer Jeev Milkha Singh has also recovered from his injury and now is aiming to do well in the US PGA.

"I've just come out of an injury and I'm working real hard on my game because I haven't worked hard on my game in three months. I've just played three times. And last week I was a little rusty. I wasn't there, but this week I've worked hard enough for the last three days and it's coming around. I hope it stays with me for the next four days," says Singh

"Oh it's a long golf course. I think you have to be a good driver of the ball on this golf course plus your short game has to be sharp too because you can't hit all of the fairways. The rough is up, you're going to hit a few shots short of the green so you've got to be sharp with your short game," he adds.
