Three students were injured when a school van overturned on the Thuraipakkam - Pallavaram Radial Road on Wednesday morning.
Police said that the owner of the van, A Sampath Kumar of Vandavasi in Tiruvannamalai, was ferrying four students of the Vels Vidyashram Senior Secondary School, when the mishap took place. The van was closely following a car, which was following an MTC bus, which took a sharp turn.
This forced the car driver to apply the brakes all of a sudden. As a result, the van driver swerved to avoid hitting the car, causing the van to overturn.
Three students, G Sundar (12), a class VII student and M Yogesh, (12) and N Nethan (11), both from Class VI, were injured in the accident, while the driver escaped.
Pallavaram Traffic Investigation Inspector Dinakaran rushed the injured students to a hospital. A case was registered and the van driver was arrested for negligent driving. The van was also seized by the police.
LPG leak fire: 5 hurt
In a fire caused by an LPG cylinder leak, four persons, including a six-year-old, were critically injured in Anna Nagar West here on Wednesday evening.
R Durairaj (42), the employee of Ganesh Gas Agency in Mogappair was trying to repair a faulty LPG regulator since 3 pm.
Around 5 pm, Durairaj asked Jothiammal to check the regulator leak by turning on the burner of the gas cooker.
When she attempted to light the burner, the gas that had leaked from the faulty regulator set off an explosion in which the victims - Jothiammal (38), Jothiammal’s son Suresh (17) and her brother Ravi, technician Durairaj and neighbour P Balaji (6) - sustained serious burns.
They were rushed to Kilpauk Medcial College Hospital. Police sources said that the condition of all, except the child, were stated to be critical. A case had been registered.
1 held for lewd SMS
A youth, Rizwan (22), was arrested for sending lewd SMS to a woman in Kelambakkam, near here, on Wednesday.
Police picked up Rizwan from his residence in Jafferkhanpet and remanded him in judicial custody.
