Ignoring a recent observation by the Supreme Court, the Tamil Nadu State Legal Services Authority has sent a letter to a rape victim asking her to appear for mediation with her rapist.
This comes just days after the Supreme Court slammed a decision by the Madras High Court to grant bail to a rapist so that he could hold mediation talks with a rape victim.
The controversial order had prompted a group of lawyers from Madras to write to the Chief Justice of Madras High Court. Subsequently, the Supreme Court made it clear that one could not resort to mediation in rape cases.
Taking a tough stand on the issue, the apex court had said that courts could not take a soft approach on mediation promoting wedlock, terming "any attempt of mediation" between a rapist and a victim as illegal.
