KOCHI: Aiming to bring in a global perspective to the education sector in Kerala, the Catholic Church is working towards setting up a Catholic University. The project is an initiative of the Syro-Malabar Church Commission for Laity. Proposed to come up in a high-range location, the university has all benediction of the Church. The project for the same would be completed soon.“The project is being prepared in consultation with globally renowned Indian and foreign educationalists,” Syro-Malabar Laity Commission secretary V C Sebastian told Express. He is of the opinion that the present flow of of students from the state will come to an end with the setting up of a university with a gobal perspective in Kerala. “We need to bring in certain standards to our education sector to make our studentscompetent to face the challenges of the modern world. A change in the conventional education system is the need of the hour. We are planning the university keeping this in mind,” he said.Though the Christ University, Bangalore is a Christian institution, it is owned and managed by the CMI community, an indigenous religious congregation. “The Christ College was elevated to the status of a deemed university. What we are planning is a new university, not the deemed university status for an existing church-run college,” he said.The Church authorities are looking for a suitable location in the high-ranges where land is available. “The university campus will spread across 1000-1500 acres. It will be an eco-friendly campus. It will offer all courses -engineering, medicine and other arts and science courses. A university with a global perspective will certainly attract students from abroad also,” said a bishop who is also the driving force behind the project. “We expect the first phase of the university to be launched in six months or by the beginning of the next academic year,” he added. The proposal will be submitted to the state and central government soon for the clearance.
