SAMBALPUR: Sonepur district faced the maximum wrath of recent floods in western Orissa with as many as 137 villages in 40 panchayats in six blocks affected. A status report on the recent flood stated that three urban local bodies and 50,187 people have been affected and standing crops on 6,835 hectares damaged.Nearly 344 villages in 23 panchayats in seven out of the nine blocks in Sambalpur district besides three Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) were affected. The unprecedented floods also left nearly 1,50,000 people of Sambalpur affected with three casualties being reported. Bargarh district saw 75,000 people affected and crops on 10,276 hecatres damaged in 507 villages in 165 panchayats of six blocks. Hundreds of villages along the Mahanadi in Harbhanga block in Boudh district faced the worst with 111 villages in 22 panchayats in all the three blocks of the district besides one ULB affected. The flood left 57,000 people affected while crop over 6,083 hectares were damaged and 1,779 houses. Lakhanpur, located on the fringes of the Hirakud Dam, was the only affected block in Jharsuguda district while three blocks in Deogarh faced the nature’s fury. The torrential rain unleashed havoc in Nuapada, Khariar blocks and Khariar NAC.
