A ‘Smart Grid’ is a grid that incorporates Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to enhance the reliability and sustainability of an electrical grid and the financial  aspects of maintaining it.“Once the ‘Smart Grid’ is in place for those consumers of the KSEB, there would be an end to the host of problems related to frequency and voltage,” Union Power Minister K C  Venugopal said in a statement. “Kerala is one of the 14 states where the project is being piloted,” he said.Power Ministry sources said that a full-fledged ‘Smart Grid’ will take time to develop in Kerala, as it involves all aspects related to distribution and large-scale integration with the ICT.In phase I of the project, as it is conceived now, the Ministry plans to introduce ‘smart metering’.The project is to be implemented as part of the three-part Restructured-Accelerated Power Development and Reforms Programme (R-APDRP)  which is being implemented in 43 towns in the state.Better billing, automatic fault finding and  rectification system which enables faster repair of damages in the system are some of the benefits of a ‘Smart Grid’.first published:January 01, 1970, 05:30 ISTlast updated:January 01, 1970, 05:30 IST
