Colombo: Sri Lanka's air force on Friday launched a second day of strikes on LTTE rebels positions in the country's north, a senior insurgent leader said, a day after a bus bombing blamed on LTTE killed 64 people.
LTTE leader Seevaratnam Puleedevan told The Associated Press that air force planes dropped bombs around their stronghold of Kilinochchi, but did not cite any figure for casualties.
"They are carrying out attacks. At least eight bombs have been dropped since dawn on Friday," Puleedevan said. "We are assessing the ground situation and our Central Command will take appropriate action."
Dangerously tense relations between LTTE and the government deteriorated further on Thursday when suspected rebels triggered hidden explosives on a bus in a predominantly ethnic Sinhalese area, killing 64 people in the worst violence since a 2002 cease-fire.
The Sri Lankan air force began retaliatory attacks on rebel positions hours after the bus bombing.
