Singapore: Singapore could host a Formula One Grand Prix in 2008, the sport's senior ruling figures were quoted as saying on Friday.
President of the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile, Max Mosley, said it would be a welcome addition to the calendar, while commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone sees a street circuit as the best option.
"Singapore is a vibrant business region with a huge motorsport fan base and it would be a welcome addition to the sport," Mosley told the Today newspaper.
"If the infrastructure and financial commitment is in place, then it is always possible that Singapore could host a Grand Prix in 2008."
Ecclestone told the same newspaper that he could "squeeze" in another round of the circuit in Asia and give Singapore the slot.
"I've been speaking to people about the possibility of a race (in Singapore)," he said.
"I think a street circuit will work well. So, the moment we have a serious proposal, I will take a look at it and positively try to make it happen in Singapore."
Mosley and Ecclestone have beeen working to move more Grand Prix around the world and away from its traditional European roots, and Asia is in their sights.
"I think Asia is good," said Ecclestone. "We have had a lot of success in Asia. Malaysia has become a lot stronger now and there is a lot more interest there. Maybe we can sqeeze one more in Asia."
While most races remain in Europe, China is now on the calendar, as is Malaysia, Japan and Australia.
Mosley said races would go where there was a fan base.
"One important aspect to consider is whether there is a strong fan base for the sport in the region," he said.
"As we have seen from the many Singaporeans who frequent the Malaysian Grand Prix, this seems to be the case."
