New Delhi: Shooter Manavjit Singh Sandhu has been awarded the 2006 Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award.
The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna is India's highest sporting honour.
Apart from Manavjit, the other players who were also in contention for the honour include Rahul Dravid (cricket), Jeev Milkha Singh (golf), Koneru Humpy (chess), M C Marykom (boxing), Gagan Narang and Samresh Jung (both shooters), and Mahesh Bhupathi (tennis).
Manavjit has already qualified for the 2008 Beijing Olympics along with Athens Olympics silver medallist Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Abhinav Bindra, Anjali Bhagwat, Gagan Narang, Avneet Kaur Sidhu, Sanjeev Rajput, Mansher Singh and Samresh Jung.
The 29-year-old Manavjit had won the gold medal in trap with a score of 143 out of 150 in the 2006 ISSF World Shooting Championships at Zagreb (Croatia) in July 2006.
Manvajit's gold medal win also saw him becoming world No. 1 in world rankings.
He had also won the bronze medal in the men's trap at the 2006 Commonwealth Games.
