Several colleagues of the trainee doctor, who was raped and murdered on duty inside the seminar hall of RG Kar medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, have raised apprehensions that the victim could have been targeted because she knew something she was not supposed too.
The parents and colleagues of the second year PG student at RG Kar medical College and Hospital have also been insisting that Sanjoy Roy, who has been arrested in the case so far, could be “only a small fry or even a scapegoat and that real culprits are yet to be apprehended”.
Victim was under tremendous stress
The victim in her diary mentioned that she was under tremendous stress and was loaded with intense work for a past few weeks. Being a second-year student, she was there in the institute for an year and as a junior doctor, it was common to work 36 hours at a stretch.
According to the report by Times of India, the colleagues said that punishment postings and shifts were common in the state-run hospital. Some claimed that the victim was trying to expose a possible ‘medicine’ racket and was murdered to silence her voice.
“We suspect it was not a simple case of rape and murder? She was targeted. How did the civic volunteer know she was in the seminar hall alone at that time?” one of the colleagues said.
‘Possible drug siphoning racket’
Another colleague claimed the victim might have known too much about something she wasn’t supposed to know. “There are murmurs of a possible drug siphoning racket in her department that she was trying to expose,” he said.
Soon after they were informed about her death, the doctor’s parents told the police that she had complained to them about massive work pressure. They also told the police she might have learnt something in the department.
Several colleagues said “punishment overwork” was an SOP in the institute, which was strictly monitored by former principal Sandip Ghosh.
Some insiders said the trainee doctor was extremely hard working and was focused on her career. She always wanted to be a doctor and chose medicine, though she had also cracked engineering entrance exam also, the report said.
The horrific incident has shaken the country with nationwide protests going on demanding the prompt action in the investigation. Junior doctors and medical students across the hospitals and medical colleges in Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad and other cities staged a protest demanding speedy justice.
Healthcare services remained affected across West Bengal for the tenth consecutive day on Sunday as agitating junior doctors at state-run hospitals continued their cease-work demanding justice for the victim.
The Calcutta High Court on August 13 ordered the transfer of the probe into the case from the Kolkata Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) which started its investigation on August 14.
