As Sania slips two rungs down to 34 in the WTA singles rankings, Paes move up two rungs, placing him11th in the individual category of ATP rankings.

New Delhi: India's tennis sensation Sania Mirza slipped two places in the singles Women's Tennis Association (WTA) rankings to finish the week in 34th spot after a back strain forced her to pull out of the Thailand Open earlier.

Sania last played in the Thailand Open, where she retired hurt in the second round after straining her lower back.

The Bangkok event was also Sania's last WTA outing of the season.

The 18-year-old Indian sensation is currently on a winter break and would resume action in time for next season's first Grand Slam, the Australian Open, for which she would be training under coach Tony Roche.

Sania previously worked with Australian Bob Brett, former mentor to Boris Becker and Goran Ivanisevic.

Paes Moves Up

Yet another final finish within a week's span has helped India's Leander Paes move two rungs up to be at 11th place in the individual category of ATP doubles rankings released on Monday.

October has been quite an eventful month for this former world doubles No. 1.

He started the month in style winning Bangkok Open with Aussie Paul Hanley and reached consecutive finals at Stockholm and Madrid with Serbian Nenad Zimonjic.
