Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Friday announced a slew of measures with a view to boost the economic status of rural people. She has allocated Rs 66 crore towards these welfare measures.
In a bid to encourage the poultry sector, the CM ordered creating two poultry clusters with Villupuram and Sankarankoil as headquarters.
While Villupuram zone would comprise Villupuram, Cuddalore, Ariyalur and Perambalur, the Sankarankoil zone would comprise Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and Virudhunagar. Under the scheme, each district would have around 230 poultry farms.
To encourage layer breeding in the districts of Dindigul, Dharmapuri, Kancheepuram, Kanyakumari, Karur, Krishnagiri, Madurai, Nagapattinam, Pudukottai, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Tiruvallur, Tiruchy and Vellore, the CM has allocated Rs 2.4 crore.
She has also directed that 20 new veterinary dispensaries be opened in rural areas at a cost of `6 crore. To provide quality medicare to the livestock, last year, the CM had ordered that 585 sub centres be upgraded as rural veterinary dispensaries. She also directed that 585 new Assistant Surgeons be appointed to man these dispensaries.
For the fishing community, the CM on Friday enhanced the quantity of subsidised kerosene supplied from 200 litres to 250 litres. This would cost an additional expenditure of Rs 37.25 lakh.
The total allocation for kerosene will be Rs 47.60 crore. The measure would benefit fishermen from Tuticorin, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts who have country boats with external engines.
The Chief Minister ordered provision of 100 litres of kerosene to the fishermen of these three districts at open market price.
