SALEM: In an early morning swoop on Saturday, sleuths of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) raided the house of R K Kumar, a high profile contractor with the Southern Railway, and later arrested him. The agency is investigating into the problems in supply of blue metal for the Salem-Karur broad gauge project, according to a city police wing.  A team of four investigators headed by Deputy Superintendent of Police Dilip Kumar launched a search at Kumar’s house at the Sree Rangan Street in Dhadhagapatti around 6 am. The gates and the doors of house were locked from inside during the raid. The City Police Intelligence Cell said they were not informed about the raids and claimed they were in the dark about the composition of the raiding team and the reason behind the exercise.Another wing of the city police indicated that Kumar undertook a major contract for supplying blue metal for the Salem-Karur broad gauge track. The CBI has found irregularities in this deal. But the officials involved in the Salem-Karur project were tightlipped about the nature of the fraud. Police sources, however, indicated that Kumar had supplied materials that were not procured from the authorised suppliers. This way, Kumar allegedly made huge financial gain to the tune of Rs 30 crore. After the seven-hour search, the CBI arrested Kumar and sped off to Chennai without divulging the raid details to the local media.
