Abu Thalla, the topmost Lashkar leader was killed by security forces in the Valley on Wednesday.

New Delhi: The Commander-in-chief of Hizbul Mujahideen, Pir Panjal Regiment (HMPPR), was among two militants gunned down by the security forces in the bordering Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir.

The troops of 48 Rashtriya Rifles and the police, in a joint operation, killed Mohammad Yasin and an associate of his - Shafaat - on Thursday.

According to news agency UNI, Yasin, was involved in the massacre of ten people at Dhar Sakri and six at Gabbar Budhal. He carried a reward of Rs 5 lakh on his head.

Two AK rifles, three magazines, six grenades, one wireless set and other incriminating documents were recovered from the site of encounter.

The operation comes close on the heels of Lashkar-e-Toiba's top commander Abu Thalla being killed in Jammu and Kashmir early on Wednesday, a move that police believe will strike at the core of the militant group's operations in the state.

Thalla, allegedly responsible for the massacres of 35 Hindus in Basantgarh in Udhampur and Kulhand in Doda on April 30-May 1 last year, was shot dead by police personnel in Hiranagar, 60 km from Jammu.

Police said he was killed in Hiranagar's Safai area, where he was trying to set up a network of his group.

Thalla was said to be the topmost Lashkar leader in Jammu. He had been orchestrating massacres, IED explosions targeting security forces as well as recruiting men for his group all over the state, particularly in Jammu region, a senior official said.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police has announced a cash reward, gallantry medals and out-of-turn promotions for police personnel who were instrumental in Abu Thalla.
