Residents fear sand mining, chase lorries

Residents from Srinivasapuram (South) chased away three lorries to thwart an alleged attempt to mine sand from the Adyar river bed on Saturday night.

All three lorries were stopped by the residents en route to the locality and were asked to return.  They did so owing to growing concerns that the removal of sand could cause sea water to easily enter their locality. They said that in 2004, when the Tsunami struck, the mouth of the Adyar river bed was seriously affected.  Meanwhile, police claimed that the residents made a mistake. The lorries were not meant to mine sand, but to clear sand left behind in the area after some construction work, police said.
