KOCHI: The government has allocated Rs 46 lakh for the renovation of the PWD working women’s hostel in Kakkanad. The move is in quick response to the report on the unused hostel, that was published in the City Express a few days back. The government’s decision to make it operational within a month has given a new lease of life to the hostel that was left idle for over a year.“An amount of Rs 46 lakh has been sanctioned by the government to convert the rooms to  double bedrooms,” Public Works Minister V K Ibrahim Kunju said. Stating that furniture are one of the primary requirements of the hostel, Kunju said, “We have made arrangements with Rubco to provide the furniture needed for the hostel.”A year back, at the time of the hostel’s inauguration, only the construction of building was complete. Kunju also stated that the as there 96 rooms in the hostel and the PWD has decided to allot these rooms to the women working in the public sector undertakings. However, priority will be given to the women working in the government sector, he added. PWD buildings executive engineer Hashim said that they have started inviting applications for renting the rooms. The hostel built by the PWD was inaugurated with much hype by the previous LDF government. Since then the hostel has not been used. The building was constructed at a cost of Rs 4 crore. Back then, only construction was completed and the rooms were not furnished due to which they could not be allotted. The PWD had submitted an estimate of Rs 46 lakh  for converting the existing rooms to double bedrooms and Rs 25 lakh to furnish single bedrooms. As of now, the government has sanctioned the first estimate submitted by the  PWD.
