KOCHI: The films were entertaining and thought-provoking.The one-day short film festival, ‘Bioscope-2012’, organised by the Film Club of the Maharaja’s College on various themes was inaugurated by Anil Sign on Tuesday.‘States of Mind’ by Sandeep and Greeshma, students from Thiruvananthapuram, bagged the first place and ‘Violet’ by Vincent Joseph of Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, won the second place in the 10-minute category. In the below 30-minute category, ‘My Love Caused You Nothing’ bagged the first and ‘Eleventh Hour’ the second prize.Mullaperiyar issue was cast in a different light in ‘States of Mind’.Two students were seen unwinding in a cafe when the news on Mullaperiyar issue catches their attention. They are irked when they watch people in Tamil Nadu ill-treating Malayalis.Soon they hear a young chap speak in Tamil on the cell phone and they vent their anger on him but are surprised to hear him speak chaste Malayalam seconds later. They ask him why he didn’t reveal his identity.“Why should I?” he retorts. The movie ends with ‘States of Mind’ fading into ‘State of Mind’.The narrative technique of ‘My Love Caused You Nothing’ was touching. The film revolved round four love stories, three of which were narrated and the fourth the narrator’s own, who burdened by a broken heart, ends his life.‘Violet’ spoke of a young man’s obsession with death which he sees around him in different forms, even that of a comedian’s.His unstable mind leads him take a leap from the top of a high rise.‘Eleventh Hour’ highlights corruption in society through the life of two young men, one an engineering college student and another a rag picker, the common link being a hundred rupee note. The note which leaves the engineering student changes hands and finally reaches a rag picker in a very soiled state that he throws it away.“Talent was reflected in all the 10 films selected. The discussions at the open forum were enlightening,” said programme convener Varghese Abraham.A 45-minute documentary on Salim Kumar titled ‘A Frame for a Protagonist’ by Anil Sign was screened. The jury comprising Rangarajan, film critic, I Shanmughadas and script writer Josey Joseph distributed the prizes.
