A former activist of the banned Al-Umma outfit received two parcels containing explosive materials here on Saturday.

A senior police officer said that while one parcel contained Improvised Explosive Device (battery cells in a plastic bottle connected with a clock and packed with jute and a material fixed with a fuse), the other one had  cracker powder stuffed inside a PVC pipe. The parcels were sent to a real estate office on South Krishnan Kovil Street run by Umar Farook.

Police said that a youth aged around 25 gave the two parcels to one R Arumugam (55), a goldsmith who has a workshop on the street, on Friday evening and asked him to hand them over to Umar Farook Umar and his partner Jamal Maideen run a real estate office on the same street. On Saturday morning, one Guru Balaji of the same area handed over the parcel to Mohammed Ismail, an employee of Umar. When Ismail opened the parcel, he was shocked to find the contents, said the senior police officer.

He immediately alerted Umar who informed the police. “We suspect the culprit might have sent this parcel to Umar to land him in trouble. It might be an act of vengeanc,” said the senior officer adding that they have formed a special team to investigate the case.

With the help of Arumugam, the police have also developed a sketch of the suspect who delivered the parcels.  The police have announced a reward of Rs 10,000 for giving information about the person who delivered the parcels.
