Local women along with students tied ‘rakhis’ to the trees in Budharaja reserve forest on the occasion of Rakhi Purnima on Wednesday.
The programme was organised by the Budharaja Vana Sanrakshan Samiti (BVSS) and Prakruti Bandhu Rushi Patra to create awareness about the forest conservation. “To create awareness among locals about conservation of forest, we thought this was one of the best opportunities to motivate them. We have been fighting for the conservation of the Budharaja forest for a long time but this idea of tying ‘rakhi’ to the trees came only in 2008. The response becomes overwhelming. We see a lot of youths coming forward for the purpose,” said Basanti Poadh, member of the Prakruti Bandhu Rushi Patra.
Once spread over 133 acres, the Budharaja reserve forest today is reduced to just 70 acres due to encroachments and other reasons.
