Rakesh Maria has been removed as Mumbai Commissioner of Police and has been elevated to DG Home Guards and DG Civil Defence. Ahmed Javed will be taking over as the Mumbai Commissioner of Police in place of Maria.
The order has been officially issued to Maria. He will hand over the charge on Tuesday itself and Javed will be taking over with immediate effect.
Maharashtra Home Secretary KP Bakshi claimed that the government wanted to issue the orders before the beginning of the festival season.
The order comes even as he has been personally monitoring the investigation into the mysterious murder of Sheena Bora in which TV Tycoon Indrani Mukerjea is a prime accused.
However, it is being said that this has nothing to do with his involvement in investigation of any particular case.
An Indian Police Service (IPS) officer who has completed 30 years in IPS is eligible to be promoted as a DGP rank officer. They are promoted on the basis of seniority against the vacancies. The Home Ministry of Government of India decides the DGP posts for each state.
Rakesh Maria was eligible for the post of DGP in 2011 itself. Maria is retiring in December 2016.
An IPS officer has to serve as an SP or in an equivalent charge for the first 12-14 years of his or her career to be promoted as a DIG. After 18 years in IPS, he or she will be promoted to the rank of an IGP. After 25 years, he or she will be promoted to the rank of a ADGP. After 30 years, he or she will get the DGP rank.
