Jaipur: Rajasthan government on Wednesday ordered an inquiry into the alleged suicide of a teenage girl, who had set herself ablaze after a youth allegedly tried to outrage her modesty.
The class-IX student had died at a government hospital in Jaipur on Tuesday.
Rajasthan home minister Virendra Beniwal ordered the inquiry by an IG rank official.
An additional compensation of Rs 2.5 lakh for the family of the girl was also announced by the minister.
The 16-year-old girl was returning from her school near Neem Ka Thana town in Sikar district on April 3 when Rajaram, who was known to her, tried to rape her.
Traumatised by the incident, the girl poured kerosene and set herself ablaze on the same day. She succumbed to the injuries yesterday at SMS hospital Jaipur.
BJP MLA Chandrakanta Meghwal raised the issue in the Assembly during Zero Hour on Wednesday and demanded a compensation of Rs 10 lakh in cash and government job for a family member.
She alleged that the SHO of Neem Ka Thana town police station refused to lodge FIR on April 3 when the incident occurred and the case was registered next day after intervention of state commission for women.
CPI-M MLA alleged that a policeman threatened the family of the victim of dire consequences if they did not compromise with the family of the accused, who is presently under judicial custody.
He said that cases of rape and gang rape were increasing in Neem Ka Thana area which was an alarming situation.
Beniwal in his reply defended police and said that the case was lodged next day of the incident because the family members of the girl had rushed her to Jaipur for treatment and went to register the case next day.
"It is not true that police refused to lodged the case. If they are not satisfied with ongoing investigation, the inquiry will now be conducted by an IG rank official," Beniwal said.
"A relief of Rs 50,000 was given to the victim's family after the incident but additional Rs 2.5 lakh will also be given to the family," he said.
Before the reply of the minister, BJP MLAs Chandrakanta Meghwal, Sanjana Agari and Vishwanath staged a sit-in in the Well of the House demanding compensation of Rs 10 lakh, but returned back to seats after the minister's reply.
