Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir government has asked the Centre to punish “black sheep in central forces” after a man died in Sopore town on Sunday when a rubber bullet fired by CRPF personnel fighting a mob hit him.
State Law Minister Ali Muhammad Sagar lashed out at the CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) at a press conference in Srinagar and accused the paramilitary force of killing Bilal Ahmad Wani.
"This was totally unwarranted. Firing (by CRPF) at this point of time is only adding fuel to the fire. What they have done is very unfortunate and it will send a very wrong message," said Sagar. "I request the Union Home minister to visit Kashmir to rein in the CRPF and punish the black sheep in the force."
Wani was hit in the neck during violent protests in Kralteng area of Sopore, a senior police officer said. The officer alleged the CRPF personnel were forced to fire rubber bullets because a mob had defied curfew restrictions and was throwing stones at them.
“The youth was immediately shifted to Srinagar for specialised treatment, but doctors at the Sher-e-Kashmir Soura Medical Institute said the youth had succumbed to critical injuries before reaching the hospital,” the officer said.
An indefinite curfew was imposed in Sopore after two young men were killed on Friday when CRPF personnel fired in self-defence after their vehicle was attacked and torched by a stone pelting mob, officials said.
The incident sparked protests across the Valley with both factions of the Hurriyat Conference calling for a shutdown.
