Protests in Karnataka as bus fare hiked by 8 per cent
Road travel is set to get costlier for commuters as authorities have also increased the toll rates on vehicles bound to the Bangalore airport.

Bangalore: The Karnataka BJP staged a protest against the state transport corporation, KSRTC (Karnataka Road Transport Corporation) after KSRTC hiked its bus fares by nearly eight per cent over the weekend on Monday.

The KSRTC fare hike comes after the recent increase in bus fares of Bangalore's transport corporation, the BMTC (Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation). The BMTC had increased its bus fares by 15 per cent.

The corporation blamed the increase in diesel prices as the reason for the steep hike in bus fares.

The Karnataka government faced protests from various quarters including commuters for the fare hike. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that the bus fare hike was inevitable.

Road travel is set to get costlier for commuters as authorities have also increased the toll rates on vehicles bound to the Bangalore airport. This sudden, steep hike has the taxi operators protesting against the authorities. They have threatened to stay off the roads indefinitely if the hikes are not rolled back immediately. One way entry toll for Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) has been increased from Rs 20 to Rs 75. Vehicles with return trip will now have to pay Rs 115 instead of Rs 30.

The BJP also staged protests against the Chennai bomb blasts.
