Kerala Police on Friday said a migrant labourer from Assam has confessed in custody that he raped and murdered Dalit law student Jisha after she turned down his advances.
The man, identified as Ameerul Islam, raped and brutally assaulted the 30-year-old woman with sharp weapons before killing her at her house in Perumbavoor in Ernakulam district on April 28, police said'. The accused has been sent to 14-day judicial custody.
According to interrogation details accessed by CNN-News18, the accused often stalked Jisha, and that even on the morning of the murder, he made obscene gestures at her.
After this he went a labour camp and consumed alcohol, before allegedly returning to Jisha's house to force his way in and attack her. Police sources said he confessed that he tried to rape her, and when she resisted, he mutilated her private parts before strangling her.
The accused knew Jisha earlier because he was one of the workers who were hired to rebuild her house, police said.
"He should be hanged to death. Nobody should suffer the way my daughter did. The accused should be subjected to the same cruelty my daughter suffered," Jisha's mother said.
Jisha's autopsy report had revealed that there were at least 38 injuries, including bite marks, on her body. The cause of death is strangulation and internal injuries, the report said.
