New Delhi: President Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday greeted the nation on the festival of Diwali saying that it may dispel "darkness of ignorance" and "illumine our lives with hope and prosperity".
"Warm greetings and best wishes to all my fellow citizens in India and abroad on the auspicious occasion of Diwali," Mukherjee wrote in a series of tweets.
"May the lighting of lamps this year dispel darkness of ignorance and suffering and illumine our lives with hope and prosperity," he said.

The President also said that let us on this day try to bring happiness in the lives of the needy by lighting the lamp of love, care and sharing. "May this festival of lights radiate happiness, peace and prosperity in every home across the country," he added. "Let us all celebrate a safe and pollution free Diwali," the President said.

Highlighting the importance of the festival, Mukherjee said, "Diwali signifies the triumph of righteousness and victory of good over evil."
He also said that "Diwali is a harbinger of hope and aspirations for a better tomorrow".
Diwali, the festival of lights is one of the most popular Hindu festivals in India.
