An assorted group of caste and community leaders and political groups came together for a PMK-organised discussion meet on Saturday that turned out to be a platform for anti- Dravidian parties rhetoric. The members of various organisations, some known and some non descripit, stressed on a new front to take on politics of Dravidian parties, which they claimed had not fulfilled some of their major demands even after 45 years in power.
This rhetoric toed the recent decision of the PMK after its drubbing in the last Assembly poll. Its leader S Ramadoss has already announced that the party will not have any alliance with the Dravidian outfits in the future.
According to many who participated in the discussion, while it was true that the organisational strength of the two principal Dravidian parties was too strong for them to ignore, time had come to look at alternative political formations which they felt could only be accomplished by coming together of such “community outfits.”
Resolutions adopted in the meet included the demand that the Government take a stronger stand when it came to defending the 69 per cent reservation in vogue in the State, which has been challenged in the court. In this regard, they felt that an independent caste census should be conducted by the State to provide strong empirical evidence supporting the population-wise reservation demand.
The resolution claimed that the ongoing socio-economic and caste census has been riddled with various allegations, including improper recording of facts as provided by the people. Therefore, the need for a fresh caste census was imminent. Further, given the expansion of jobs in the private sector and corresponding shrink in public undertakings, it was time a case for private sector reservations is made, it said.
